VALPOLICELLA: GEOLOGY

Located between the foothills of the Alps and the alluvial plain of river Adige, Valpolicella has soils of varying composition, which give different characters to the wines produced.
Above the natural terracing joining Sant’Ambrogio to Parona, formed during the Quaternary Age, and to the entrance of the valleys of Fumane, Marano and Negrar, red and brown soils are found, except on the hill of Castelrotto, where brown marl from the Cretaceous period is dominant.

Eocene red compact red soils over Eocene limestone are found to the north of Sant’Ambrogio (San Giorgio), and also on the slopes towards Santa Maria Valverde, Gnirega of Valgatara, San Floriano, and Pedemonte, ending on the ridge that descends to Parona, Arbizzano and Novare.
Brown soils on marls of Cretaceous age are found in the upper part of Valpolicella, in Mazzurega, Purano, Monte Comun and partially in the Valley of Negrar. Red compact soils derived from basalt are restricted to areas of limestone mixed by landslides from high valleys of Marano and Negrar.
